Louie M's Burger Lust
INTRODUCTION:
A rainy Saturday found us at Louie M’s Burger Lust in Omaha. Louie M’s has been an iconic burger place in Omaha since 1980 and is still famous for their hand-pattied ½ pound burgers. The place is packed at noon, with breakfast served all day. They have a full breakfast menu with weekend breakfast specials. Louie greets us at the front door and seats parties as quickly as a table opens up. The walls are lined with antique posters, signs, maps and various memorabilia. It is definitely easy to keep occupied while waiting for a table or your delicious burger.
THE FOOD:
Drink orders were taken and hustled out to the table. We started with a basket of homemade onion rings ($4) which were very good. They had a cornmeal coating that worked and they were crunchy and not greasy.
Again, our sandwich orders were predictable- Jim with the ½ pound burger, Patty ordered the Patty Melt, Rick the Pork Tenderloin and Sarah a Reuben. ($8 to $11).
Jim said his Louie’s Famous Award Winning Hand Patted ½ pound burger was “awesome”, probably the best he’s had.
Patty said her Patty Melt was delicious, she wouldn’t change a thing.
Rick’s tenderloin was floured then grilled (not deep-fat fried) and was excellent.
Sarah’s Rueben had great flavor in the filling but was served on white bread, with one side hot and the other side soggy (held under a heat lamp too long). If there had been rye bread, this would be worthy of a repeat. Otherwise, I’d suggest trying something different.
We were accompanied by Sarah’s daughter who ordered the naked burger (no bun) which was great- but was missing the lettuce.
We also had a grandson in attendance who ordered a cheeseburger off the children’s menu which he declared “I love it”; in his short 5 years, the best he’d had.
The accompanying French Fries were plentiful but not particularly hot or crispy. The cooks were likely overwhelmed at their noon-time rush and their timing of getting orders out was strained.
Burger Lust has weekday lunch specials and an assortment of ice cream treats, chocolate cake and carrot cake. Their bar offers Bloody Mary’s and Mimosa, beer, ales, wine by the glass. Louie M’s Burger Lust is definitely a favorite of locals and food enthusiasts alike!
THE SERVICE:
We had to wait a long time to be seated, but that was no ones fault, and Louie hustled to find us another chair
SUMMARY: all is well at Louie’s, as everything there was enjoying their food, and it seems that most people were regulars
